The Faridpur district Awami League and its affiliates have not faced such an image crisis or catastrophe since the post-independence period. In the ongoing cleansing operation, the influential leaders of the party are being caught one by one by the police. According to party veterans and detractors, the arrest of a few leaders has done considerable damage to the long-standing image of the district Awami League. Many leaders are blaming Faridpur-3 (Sadar) MP Engineer Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and his brother, former Upazila Chairman Khandaker Mohtesham Hossain Babar.
Sajjad Hossain Barkat, the expelled general secretary of the city Awami League, and Imtiaz Hasan Rubel, the expelled president of his brother's press club, have given some shocking information during the police interrogation. Besides, the two brothers have mentioned the names of some influential leaders during the interrogation in the money laundering case of Tk 2,000 crore filed by the CID. City Awami League president Nazmul Hasan Khandaker Levy, Labor League finance secretary Billal Hossain and former city Juba League general secretary Asibur Rahman Farhan have already been detained. So far, police have arrested 16 members of the Awami League and its allies. Sources said that during the interrogation of Barkat-Rubel, they named 60 people as accomplices in their various misdeeds. Of those, 44 are still out of police custody. Hundreds of leaders and activists of the Awami League and allied organizations have covered up after the arrest of the city Awami League president-general secretary. They are now fleeing to avoid arrest. Someone has reportedly fled to India again. Meanwhile, party sources said the decision to expel at least 30 leaders of the district Awami League and allied organizations for allegedly tarnishing the Awami League's reputation for a long time has been finalized. Infiltrating corrupt and 'hybrid' leaders from different parties are now suffering from the fear of arrest and expulsion.
It is learned that in one era, those who have become the owners of crores of rupees overnight through domination, tenders, extortion, murder, kidnapping, land grabbing, arbitrage trade are also being investigated by several intelligence agencies.
Meanwhile, at a special meeting of the Faridpur district Awami League, the leaders made it clear that the party would not take responsibility for the arrested leaders and those whose names were on the corruption list. The apostate leaders of the party were present at the meeting held at the district Awami League office on Thursday night. The meeting said that the trial of the corrupt will be welcomed as per the law. The meeting also thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her anti-corruption drive. At the same time the speakers sought the intervention of the central leaders for the speedy expulsion of the infiltrators from the party.
